Thailand Travel Insurance: Beaches, Temples & What to Watch Out For

From the party beaches of Koh Samui and Phuket to the spiritual calm of Chiang Mai’s temples, Thailand offers an extraordinary range of experiences for Australian travellers. It’s also one of the countries where Australians make the most travel insurance claims, for good reason. Road accidents, water sports injuries, street food illnesses, and opportunistic theft are all genuine risks.

Medical Care in Thailand

Thailand has a two-tier medical system. Bangkok and major tourist areas have world-class private hospitals (Bumrungrad in Bangkok is one of Asia’s best). However, rural areas can have limited facilities, and medical evacuation to Bangkok or home to Australia can be expensive. Always carry comprehensive medical cover of at least AUD $5 million, and keep the 24/7 emergency assistance number saved in your phone.

Road Accidents and Motorbikes

Thailand has one of the world’s highest road fatality rates. Scooter and motorbike rentals are tempting, and dangerous. Your standard policy likely excludes motorbike cover unless you hold a valid motorcycle licence. Always confirm before renting.

Even as a passenger in a tuk-tuk, songthaew, or taxi, road accidents are a risk. Make sure your policy covers injuries sustained in any form of road accident.

Water Sports and Island Activities

Scuba diving, snorkelling, jet-skiing, parasailing, Thailand’s coastlines offer unlimited adventure. Scuba diving is often excluded from base policies; if you plan to dive, either purchase a dedicated diving add-on or choose a policy that explicitly covers recreational scuba to a standard depth (typically 40 metres for recreational divers).

Theft and Petty Crime

Tourist areas in Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket have documented issues with bag snatching, phone theft, and gem scams. Ensure your policy includes personal belongings cover with a reasonable per-item limit (AUD $1,000+ for phones and cameras). Keep your most valuable items in a hotel safe.
